Criminal Minds will feature Luke Perry in season premiere

To help pay tribute to the show’s 300th episode, Criminal Minds has come up with a special way to say thanks to fans who’ve been with the drama since its 2005 pilot.

Executive producer Erica Messer tells EW exclusively that she’ll do “a lot of exploration of the history of the show in the 300th episode, right from jump. Even when we would normally be doing a ‘previously on Criminal Minds,’ we give a little history lesson of the current team on the show.”

That means bringing back several faces from the show’s long run, including Luke Perry as cult leader Benjamin Cyrus, EW has learned. He originally appeared in the season 4 episode “Minimal Loss.”

We know what you’re thinking: He’s dead, right? Maybe, maybe not… at least for the season 14 premiere. And he won’t be the only surprise “guest.” Expect manyfamiliar faces to pop in the premiere.

“It’s acknowledging the talent and history of those people,” Messer says, adding, “The plot will make sense.”

For those who lost track of where Criminal Minds wrapped, Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) were in jeopardy, and the team raced to save them from becoming the next victims of the latest un-sub.

Criminal Minds returns Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 10 p.m. ET.

In addition to Cook, Matthew Gray Gubler and Joe Mantegna will respectively direct for a 12th and ninth time, while Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez are set to helm their second episodes to date.

On the writing front, Messer said that cast member Kirsten Vangsness “most likely” will team up with the showrunner again to pen an episode, the actress’ fifth.

As has been well reported, Criminal Minds‘ 14th season — which opens on Wednesday, Oct. 3 with the series’ landmark 300th episode — is currently set for 15 episodes, down from the usual 22 or so.

“There’s always a chance there’s more,” Messer said. “But at this point, we’re going with the 15 order, and I’m planning for that in terms of storytelling.”

Criminal Minds‘ truncated Season 14 might get a tiny bit bigger, though right now it stands as just 15 episodes.

Through its first 13 cycles, the CBS crime drama has averaged 23 episodes per season, and never fewer than 20 (the previous low delivered in Season 3).

Explaining the shortened order, CBS president Kelly Kahl told TVLine at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, “First of all, that’s what we need” — and as of now, not a single episode more. “Scheduling gets more difficult as we try to pack more shows into the schedule each season, with fewer repeats,” he elaborated. “The number of episodes you need tends to ‘accordion’ a little bit.”

Even at just 15, “We consider that a full season,” Kahl affirmed. “There’s still the possibility we might ask them for a few [additional] episodes, but that’s where we’re starting at.”

With its most recent run — airing an hour later on Wednesdays — Criminal Minds averaged a 1.0 rating, landing in a four-way tie for third among all CBS dramas (behind NCIS and Bull). In total viewers (with 5.7 million), it ranked 13 out of 17 CBS dramas.

In teasing the resolution of the latest season finale — which left both Garcia and Reid in forms of life-and-death jeopardy — showrunner Erica Messer looked ahead to a major milestone, saying, “There is no greater way to launch a season than to say ‘our 300th episode.’”

Criminal Minds Leaves Two Agents In Serious Peril After Season 13 Finale

Criminal Minds promised a Season 13 finale cliffhanger, and boy did it deliver.

The season closer ended with Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) figuring out who the mole inside the FBI from a serial killer cult was and holding her at gun point. Unfortunately, he couldn’t take her out because at the last second she revealed that the group had Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) held hostage. She offered Reid an ultimatum to come with her and join the cult, or Garcia would be next on their victim list.

The team’s most valuable players are now both in grave danger and the rest of the BAU is still minutes away from Quantico so help won’t be arriving any time soon. TV Guide talked to executive producer Erica Messer about the decision to end the season in such a jaw-dropping way, especially as Criminal Minds still waits for an official renewal from CBS.

How worried should we be, Erica? Two of our agents are in very serious danger at the end of these two episodes.
Erica Messer: I know, I know. It’s crazy. We are certainly in love with both Garcia and Dr. Reid. They feel like two incredibly important pieces to our team, who won’t be available if they’re held captive. They won’t be available to help us solve the case, which is crazy. The challenges we’re coming up with now are, “Gosh, if we have two of our MVPs sitting on the sidelines here, what can we do? What clues do they possibly leave behind for us to help find where they’re being held or how we help to solve this case without them?” It’s one of the first times, I think, we’ve ever been without, truly, truly without the help of both of them.

We do these things just to challenge ourselves, to surprise the audience, to challenge the actors who are, I think, really excited that that’s how the season ended, and to keep us all waiting all summer to figure out what happens. It’s hopefully filling the definition of what a cliffhanger should be.

Reid had a hard time while he was in prison in Season 12

Reid came off of his required sabbatical to solve this crime. What sort of long-term effects will he feel after being pulled into something this stressful? How will his own teammate being in danger affect him when he was supposed to be resting for these exact reasons?
Messer: Exactly, I know. Well, that’s one of the amazing things with Reid is he had this season last year where he had to come up with new survival skills because he was in an environment he never should have been in and that has changed him over the season and moving forward. I feel like we have a much more sure Dr. Reid at the beginning of that episode, having been lured to that storage unit. And then, by the end, having a very tricky predicament there at the end of the episode.

I feel like there will be some effect to that stress, but he also is such a strong character, who tends to compartmentalize and to allow him to keep helping the team and figure things out. Ideally, he does not collapse or anything like that, that he can still be our Dr. Reid that we lean on.

Garcia is yelling for him to just shoot at the end of the episode. Is that something he’s actually considering, or would he never do that, considering where Garcia is at that particular moment?
Messer: I think it’s something he would really consider because we’ve seen him do what he has to do to survive when he was on his own in prison. I feel like that is a very real threat. Is he going to kill this woman? If he does that, does that put a bullet in Garcia’s head, which would be … Obviously, he’s weighing all of that out in that moment because he would never do anything to jeopardize Garcia. He will only make the move that he knows would be the safest thing for her.

 

This is the second season you wrote that you guys have decided to end the season with a huge cliffhanger like this. What is the exciting part of leaving fans wanting more, rather than perhaps tying things up in a neat bow just in case you guys don’t come back next season?

Messer: I feel very hopeful, and that’s all I can say is hopeful, that we would have the opportunity to tie this up, if not given a full season, which is what we’re all hoping for because of the fact that it is our 300th episode. But I would say there were a few years where I really was opposed to this kind of cliffhanger, where I enjoyed wrapping up a season and letting the team just be happy and smiling. I certainly did at the end of Season 7, when J.J. and Will got married, and Prentiss announced to the team, sort of individually, that she wasn’t gonna come back, and everybody had a final dance with her. It was just really lovely. I was happy to end the season that way because the team had been through so much that year, that it just felt like they deserved to have a night off.

This year just felt like we hit the ground running, post-car accident, catching Mr. Scratch, Prentiss being held captive. We just didn’t come up for air. We’re doing it all the way up until the very end. I felt like that almost made sense given this season, that oh my gosh, we’ve been up against it this year, and there’s no signs of it stopping. There was something that felt sort of organic about that storytelling.

Is there a contingency plan, if you don’t get picked up for a full season, how you would wrap this up? Maybe like a special Criminal Minds movie event or anything. 
Messer: There’s been no discussion about that. Again, I’m just incredibly hopeful that we get a chance to have a season to explore all of it.

The introduction of the cult is actually a very interesting premise. Do you want to wrap it all up in one episode? Or could we see this cult be a continued threat for the BAU?
Messer: There’s two trains of thought on that right now, as far as the writers go. But there is something sort of natural in that could be an opportunity that you shut down one part of the cult, but there’s another part that’s still going. There’s another part, and holy cow, this is bigger than we thought it was. We’re gonna be in the room deciding that really soon hopefully. I think there’s something pretty cool about the idea of this launches into a season 14. It gives us a drive for the first part of the season, at the very least.

Why Criminal Minds Can’t End Yet

Earlier this week CBS handed out renewals to 11 of its shows, but veteran procedural Criminal Minds was left off the list. The absence is noticeable, but it’s not strange for CBS.

Why do Criminal Minds fans have to be stressed out season after season? Allow us to get a little business-y here. As TV Guide explained in 2016, Criminal Minds airs on CBS but it is co-produced by ABC Studios. That makes it more expensive than CBS’ other dramas which are produced by the network’s in-house studio. As the show progresses, the series regulars also go through contract negotiations. The extra step of hammering out a deal with ABC Studios is what delays CBS from giving a green light to one of its longest-running dramas when it renews the rest of the batch.

That being said, the renewal is a situation that needs to be remedied, ASAP.

The show is still CBS’ fifth-ranked drama and delivered a Season 13 finale that demands more episodes be issued. The season ender concluded with Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) holding the member of a serial killer cult (and she’s an FBI mole!) at gunpoint, only to find out the cult was already holding Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) hostage. The cliffhanger was whether Reid would concede to going with the cult to save Garcia or if he’d shoot the mole and risk Baby Girl’s life.

According to Criminal Minds executive producer Erica Messer, this is the first time the show has put both its smartest team member and tech guru in danger at the same time. The Season 13 finale is also the show’s 299th episode, which leaves the possibility of reaching the milestone 300th dependent on CBS’ good graces to renew the show and allow it. If the network decides to cancel, it would go down as cruel a move as the time NBC ended Law & Order just one season short of it breaking the longest-running television drama record.

The bad news is that Criminal Minds has slipped in ratings. It dropped to a 0.99 for Season 13, a sizable decrease in viewers from Season 12. Is it a big enough dip for CBS to pull the cord without allowing the show to wrap up these storylines? There has not been a contingency plan discussed to give fans a satisfying ending if the network decides to be done.

That’s really the most important reason for CBS to renew the show. Season 13 showed that it is still willing to take big risks and while the cast and crew deserve to reach that landmark 300th episode, the fans deserve to have a proper goodbye to a show they’ve kept on the air for over a decade.

Criminal Minds should get a Season 14 because there are still more stories to tell for the BAU, but it needs one to finish the one it started with the season finale. We need to know what happens to Reid and Garcia, even if it isn’t a walk off into the sunset.

A Chefe de Criminal Minds compartilha esperanças de renovação e fala sobre o tenso final de temporada

“Espere o inesperado, porque eu não sei se já terminamos uma temporada do jeito que estamos terminando esta”, avisa a produtora executiva Erica Messer. “Desculpe-me antecipadamente por qualquer estresse que cause a alguém.”

Criminal Minds da CBS vai terminar a 13ª temporada com um final que é um “episódio duplo” apenas no nome – na medida em que resultou dessa forma, devido ao agendamento e não por concepção (como o drama criminal às vezes faz).

Nos dois episódios de quarta-feira, que começam uma hora antes, às 22 horas (Horário de Brasília), na CBS, “o único ponto em comum é que você vê brotar uma amizade entre Lewis e Alvez (interpretados por Aisha Tyler e Adam Rodriguez)”, explica Erica Messer. “Nós todos concordamos que era bom vê-los sorrindo e gargalhando, para ter essa leveza que nem sempre conseguimos ter.”

A hora de abertura gira em torno do Taos Hum, “que é esse fenômeno sobre um zumbido de baixa frequência que é conhecido por deixar as pessoas loucas. Se você pesquisar no Google, você encontrará algumas coisas interessantes!”, diz Messer. “É quase como se fosse uma idéia para Arquivo X de certa forma, porque é como ‘isso realmente está acontecendo?’, e está mesmo.”

Em seguida, no verdadeiro final de temporada, James Urbaniak (de Difficult People e Review) é um agente VICAP (Programa Violent Criminal Apprehension Program) que Reid é levado a encontrar em uma unidade de armazenamento, desencadeando um mistério que irá manter os telespectadores se indagando até os momentos finais. “Nós realmente não fomos capazes de fazer nada assim, no qual um agente do FBI está desaparecido, e quando ele é encontrado, presumidamente morto, vemos que ele aprendeu a sobreviver como uma vítima por mais de um ano”, diz Messer. “Esse cara estava tentando resolver um caso não com habilidades de criação de perfil, mas habilidades da VICAP, e sua quase ingenuidade o fez ser apanhado por serial killers.”

Mas à medida que a BAU mergulha cada vez mais fundo no caso, percebemos: “Há uma coisa ainda maior em jogo …”, alerta Messer.

Essa “coisa maior” deixará dois agentes em perigo, à medida que a temporada for chegando ao fim – uma jogada talvez não tão ousada para o drama número 3 da CBS, que, se renovado, abrirá a 14ª temporada com nada menos que seu 300º episódio. Vários personagens estarão em perigo no final da temporada, que é o 299º episódio da série. Se o show conseguir a renovação, o final cria uma abertura de temporada extremamente emocionante para o 300º episódio.

Messer admite que está “contando com” a boa ideia de lançar a 14ª temporada com uma hora marcante para dar à CBS aquele último empurrão final para renovar.

Terminar a temporada com um gancho é um pouco arriscado, já que a Criminal Minds ainda está esperando por seu anúncio oficial de renovação, mas Messer quer encerrar a temporada de uma forma nova e excitante. “Na última temporada, fizemos um enorme acidente de carro, e você sabia que havia certos personagens que ficariam bem,pois não estavam na batida dos veículos”, explica ela. “Este ano, nós queríamos agitar um pouco, e é por isso que escolhemos o cliffhanger (gancho) que fizemos.”

“Não há melhor maneira de lançar uma temporada do que com o ‘nosso 300º episódio’”, ela opina. “Nosso show por passou por dificuldades tantas vezes, e nós temos uma base de fãs tão grande e leal, que esteve conosco durante todas essas mudanças, que eu certamente espero que tenhamos essa oportunidade para celebrar 13 anos de histórias.”

Tem sido uma sequência de estresse sem parar em Criminal Minds nesta temporada. Começou com Prentiss (Paget Brewster) sendo seqüestrada por Mr. Scratch (Bodhi Elfman) e a revelação de que o agente Stephen Walker (Damon Gupton) não sobreviveu ao acidente de carro que concluiu o final da 12ª temporada. Infelizmente, o final da 13ª temporada não terminará com um “felizes para sempre”.

“Se temos membros da equipe em perigo, é sempre uma incrível motivação para a equipe e para nós, como escritores, realmente entrar e fazer tudo que estiver ao nosso alcance para restaurar nossa equipe como deveria estar”, diz Messer.

O evento final da 13ª temporada de Criminal Minds começa na quarta-feira, 18 de abril, às 22 horas (Horário de Brasília), na CBS.

Criminal Minds Boss Shares Renewal Hope, Teases Tense Finale

“Expect the unexpected because I don’t know if we’ve ever quite ended a season the way we’re ending this one,” executive producer Erica Messer warns. “I’m sorry in advance for any stress I cause anyone.”

CBS’ Criminal Minds will wrap Season 13 with a finale that is a “double episode” in name only — in that it turned out that way due to scheduling and not by design (as the crime drama sometimes does).

Across the two Wednesday episodes, which start an hour earlier at 9/8c, “The only common thread is that you see a friendship sprouting between Lewis and Alvez (played by Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez),” showrunner Erica Messer explains. “We all sort of agreed that it was nice to see them smiling and laughing, to have that levity that we don’t always get to have.”

The opening hour revolves around The Taos Hum, “which is this phenomenon about a low-frequency hum that is known to drive people crazy. If you Google it, you’ll find some interesting things!” says Messer. “It almost feels like it would fit an X-Files idea in a way, because it’s like, ‘Is this really happening?’ And it is.”

The actual season finale then guest-stars James Urbaniak (Difficult People, Review) as a VICAP (Violent Criminal Apprehension Program) agent whom Reid is led to find in a storage unit, triggering a mystery that will keep viewers guessing until the final moments.

“We haven’t really been able to do anything like this, where an FBI agent has been missing, and then when he’s found, presumed dead, we see that he learned how to survive as a victim for over a year,” says Messer. “This guy was trying to solve a case not with profiling skills but VICAP skills, and his almost-naivete got him caught, by serial killers.”

But as the BAU dives ever deeper into the case, we realize, “There’s an even bigger thing at play…,” Messer warns.

That “bigger thing” will leave two agents in harm’s way as the season cuts to black — a perhaps not-so-bold move for CBS’ No. 3-rated drama, which if renewed would open Season 14 with no less than its 300th episode. If the show lands the renewal, the finale sets up an extremely exciting season opener for the landmark 300th episode.

Ending the season on a cliffhanger is a bit of a risk as Criminal Minds is still waiting for their official renewal announcement, but Messer wants to wrap up the season in an exciting new fashion. “Last season, we did a massive car accident, and you knew that there were certain characters that were gonna be okay because they weren’t in the car accident,” she explains. “This year, we wanted to shake that up a little bit, which is why we chose the cliffhanger we did.”

Messer admits that she is “counting on” the nifty notion of launching Season 14 with a milestone hour to give CBS that last, final nudge to renew.

“There is no greater way to launch a season than to say ‘our 300th episode,’” she opines. “Our show has been through the wringer so many times, and we have such a great, loyal fan base that has been with us throughout all of these changes, I would certainly hope that we get that opportunity, to celebrate 13 years of stories.”

It’s been a non-stop stress train on Criminal Minds this season. It kicked off with Prentiss (Paget Brewster) being kidnapped by Mr. Scratch (Bodhi Elfman) and the reveal that Agent Stephen Walker (Damon Gupton) didn’t survive the car crash the concluded the Season 12 finale. Unfortunately, the Season 13 finale won’t end happily ever after either.

Multiple characters will be in danger at the end of the finale, which is the show’s 299th episode. “If we have team members in jeopardy, that’s always an incredible drive for the team internally and for us as writers to really jump in and do everything in our power to restore our team as they should be,” Messer says.
